Tetraethylsilane is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is used as an additive in gasoline to reduce air pollution and as a catalyst in the chemical industry. Tetraethylsilane has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups in organic compounds. Tetraethylsilane reacts with carbon sources such as acetylene, ethylene, benzene, and butadiene to form carboxylates such as ethyl acetate, ethyl benzoate, or propylene glycol. The presence of hydroxyl groups on the surface of a semiconductor can also be detected by optical sensors. Tetraethylsilane has been used for structural analysis of fatty acids, which are important components of biological membranes.
Tetraethysilane has been found to have kinetic energy that ranges from 3-5 kcal/mol and activation energies that range from 0.4-1.0 kcal/mol
