Retinyl oleate is a retinol ester that is used in the treatment of vitamin A deficiency. Retinyl oleate is biologically inert and has a low toxicity, which makes it suitable for use in ophthalmic preparations. The retinol moiety of retinyl oleate is responsible for its antioxidant activity, while the fatty acid chain provides stability to the molecule and determines its solubility. Retinyl oleate has been shown to be effective in treating congenital amaurosis, which is an eye disease characterized by loss of vision due to degeneration of the retina.
In vitro experiments have shown that retinyl oleate prevents oxidative damage to cells by reacting with reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. Rat liver microsomes have also been shown to react with all-trans-retinoic acid, which may explain some of the drug's effects on liver cells.
