Tetraiodoisobenzofuran-1,3-dione belongs to a class of organic chemicals called hydroxyaryl compounds. Hydroxyaryl compounds are symmetrical molecules with a molecular weight of less than 300 that contain a hydroxy group and at least one aromatic ring. Tetraiodoisobenzofuran-1,3-dione is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of other organic chemicals, such as polyvinyl chloride and polyester resins. It is also used as a reagent in chemical synthesis. When exposed to water, tetraiodoisobenzofuran-1,3-dione hydrolyzes to form an acid and acetone. Tetraiodoisobenzofuran-1,3-dione can be classified according to its crystal system; it has the orthorhombic crystal system with space group Pbca.
