6-Hydroxydopamine hydrobromide (6-OHDAH) is a neurotoxin that blocks the synthesis of dopamine, a neurotransmitter. It has been used to study locomotor activity and bowel disease in animals. 6-OHDAH is also a potent oxidant, which can cause oxidative injury to tissues and cells. This drug has been shown to cause neuronal death by inhibiting energy metabolism in the brain, as well as causing mitochondrial membrane potential changes in neurons. 6-OHDAH has also been used as an experimental model for Parkinson's disease and other metabolic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus.
