- Homatropine HCl
Homatropine hydrochloride is a drug that is used to dilate the pupils of the eye. It is an ester of tropine and atropine, which are both alkaloids found in plants of the nightshade family. Homatropine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the activity of acetylcholine on the muscles that control pupil size. This drug also has a chemical structure similar to propranolol hydrochloride, which may account for its ophthalmic properties. Homatropine hydrochloride has shown no effect on water permeability or lipid content in tissue culture cells. The drug also inhibits geniculate nucleus activity in transgenic animals, which may be related to its miotic properties.
