2-(Methylamino)acetic acid hydrochloride is a chitosan quaternary ammonium compound that modulates the HIV-1 protease. The compound inhibits the activity of HIV-1 protease by binding to the active site and stabilizes a tetrahedral intermediate in the enzyme's catalytic cycle. This inhibition prevents cleavage of Gag and Gag-Pol polyproteins, which are needed for viral replication. 2-(Methylamino)acetic acid hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against various strains of HIV in vitro and in vivo, including those that are resistant to other protease inhibitors such as Saquinavir or Ritonavir.
