1-(benzenesulfonyl)-4-methylbenzene (1BSMB) is a catalyst that is used in the Friedel-Crafts reaction. This reaction proceeds by a radical mechanism and is usually catalyzed by aluminium chloride. The biphenyl and aldehyde react to form an organosulfur compound with 1-phenyl-1-(benzenesulfonyl)methane as the intermediate. The product can be obtained in high yield, although the time required for this reaction may be long. 1BSMB has been shown to be effective for the synthesis of sulfoxides and chlorides, as well as other organic compounds containing sulfur.
