2-Ethyl-2-hexenal is an organic compound that has a hydroxyl group, which is the reactive part of the molecule. It is a colorless liquid with an odor reminiscent of green apples. 2-Ethyl-2-hexenal can be synthesized in a laboratory by dehydration and hydrogenation of hexanal. It is used as a catalyst for wastewater treatment and as a solvent for chemical reactions. 2-Ethyl-2-hexenal also has synergistic effects with other compounds, such as sodium hydroxide solution, which are used to treat wastewater. The hydroxyl group in 2-ethyl hexenal reacts with the sodium hydroxide solution to produce hydrogen gas and 2-ethyl hexanol, which reduces sludge volume by breaking down proteins and fats. Coumarin derivatives are often used for their antioxidant properties and can be prepared from 2-ethyl hexenal through oxidation with potassium permanganate or chromic acid.
