Pyridoxal is a group p2 vitamin that is structurally similar to pyridoxal 5-phosphate and pyridoxamine. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to chelate iron, which may be due to its hydrazone structure. Pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (PIH) is a synthetic analog of pyridoxal that also has antioxidant properties. PIH also acts as an antimicrobial agent by inhibiting bacterial growth through the inhibition of protein synthesis. PIH can also act as a chelator for other metal ions such as copper and zinc, which may be due to its redox potentials. PIH is currently being studied for use in optical sensors using electrochemical measurements.
