Description:

Diethylphosphatoethyltriethoxysilane (DEPES) is a cationic surfactant that is used as a diagnostic agent for the detection of hydrochloric acid. It has a pH value of less than 7. DEPES has good stability in acidic solutions with high values and can be used in methyl ethyl ketone to prepare samples for FT-IR spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This compound is also used as an anti-infective agent. DEPES binds to the surface of particle, forming a hydrophobic layer that prevents water penetration and reduces the amount of free chlorine ions present in solution. It also reacts with sodium citrate to form sodium diethylphosphate, which has disinfecting properties.
DEPES is not active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or mycobacterium avium complex because they do not have negatively charged surfaces.
