1-Methylindan is a naphthalene derivative that is used as an intermediate in pharmaceutical preparations. It inhibits the function of soluble guanylate cyclase, which is important for the regulation of cardiac hypertrophy. 1-Methylindan also blocks transfer reactions, resulting in decreased levels of ATP and increased levels of ADP. This compound has shown to be effective in preventing or reversing cardiac hypertrophy induced by glutamate or angiotensin II, which can lead to heart failure. 1-Methylindan also binds to the carbonyl group on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase and inhibits electron transfer from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen, leading to a decrease in ATP production and an increase in ROS production.
