2-Methyl-1-phenyl-1-propene is a colorless liquid with a high viscosity and melting point. It is used primarily as an intermediate for the production of other chemicals, such as diborane, styrene, and alkyl derivatives. The reaction of 2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propene with alkali metals produces coordination complexes. This compound can be synthesized by dehydrogenation of diborane in the presence of aluminum oxide or phosphine. 2-Methyl-1-phenyl-1-propene has not been found to be carcinogenic or toxic to humans at the levels typically found in human exposure.
