1-Methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carboxamide is an intermediate in the metabolism of tryptophan. It is a metabolite of 3-hydroxykynurenine, which is formed by hydrocortisone and tryptophan metabolites. 1MOXDCA has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme pyrrolase, which catalyzes the conversion of tryptophan to kynurenine. This inhibitory effect may be responsible for some of the clinical effects observed with this compound. Vitamin B6 has also been shown to increase the activity of pyrrolase, suggesting that 1MOXDCA may be involved in vitamin B6 metabolism as well.
