2-Phenylbutanenitrile is a hydroxylated aromatic compound that is synthesized from phenylacetonitrile. The asymmetric synthesis of 2-phenylbutanenitrile involves a hydrated reaction with sodium methoxide and butyronitrile, which are used as the reagents and the carbon source respectively. The 2-phenylbutanenitrile is then reacted with ammonium chloride to produce the amide. This amide has been shown to have enzyme activities such as esterase, lipase and protease. These properties make it possible for this compound to be used in medicines. It also has specificities that allow it to act on certain types of bacteria such as staphylococci and streptococci.
