4-Phenyl-1,3-dioxane is a dioxane that is activated by the addition of an acid catalyst. This compound has been shown to be a good replacement for dichlorocarbene in the activation of phenols. The reaction mechanism with 4-phenyl-1,3-dioxane and hydrochloric acid proceeds through an addition/elimination process. The product of this reaction is a chloride ion that can then react with another phenol molecule to form a new molecule of 4-phenyl-1,3-dioxane. When this reaction occurs at higher temperatures, the rate of the reaction increases because there are more collisions between molecules. In order to obtain high yields from this type of reaction, it is best to allow it to occur at room temperature for approximately one hour.
