(R)-3-Phenylbutyric Acid ee is a chiral metabolite that is produced by the hydrolysis of butyric acid. It has been shown to be an endogenous ligand for the histamine H2 receptor and also inhibits uptake of glucose into cells. The inhibition of glucose uptake may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme neutral endopeptidase, which is responsible for degrading angiotensin II. The synthesis of (R)-3-phenylbutyric acid ee is dependent on the strain of bacteria used and can be optimized for production in certain bacteria such as Escherichia coli.
