2,4-Difluorocinnamic acid is a dicarboxylic acid. It is used in the synthesis of cinnamic acid derivatives and as an intermediate in the production of pesticides. 2,4-Difluorocinnamic acid is also used for the synthesis of 3-chlorocinnamic acid, which has been shown to inhibit the activity of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme catalyses the conversion of cinnamyl alcohol to cinnamic acid. The use of 2,4-difluorocinnamic acid has been considered as a possible alternative to phenoxyacetic acids in herbicides.
2,4-Difluorocinnamic acid can be synthesized by cross-coupling reactions with organotin compounds or naphthols and catalytic reactions with butyllithium or sodium amide.
