4-Acetylbibenzyl is a bifunctional catalyst that can be used for the reduction of carbonyl compounds. It is encapsulated in mesoporous silica and has been shown to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation and asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of various types of alcohols. 4-Acetylbibenzyl is also able to catalyze the reduction process of aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes, ketones, esters, nitriles, etc. The active form of 4-acetylbibenzyl is an enol derivative. This compound reacts with electron donors (such as alcohols) to produce acetaldehyde or other products depending on the conditions.
