Trichloroprop-2-enoyl chloride is a reactive chemical that is used as an oxidation catalyst for the polymerase chain reaction. It has been shown to be effective in animal experiments as a cancer treatment. Trichloroprop-2-enoyl chloride binds to the aromatic hydrocarbon moiety of nucleic acid, which prevents RNA synthesis and DNA replication. This compound reacts with the alkylthio group of thiols and forms an intermediate that is subsequently oxidized by chloride ions to form a carboxylic acid. The exothermic nature of this process causes the temperature to rise in the reaction vessel, which may require cooling during use.
