It can be synthesized by reacting lithium metal with 3,4-(prop-2-enyloxy)phenylacetaldehyde in the presence of hexacarbonyl and cyclohexene at temperatures of −30°C to −50°C. 4-[(Prop-2-en-1-yloxy)methyl]-1,3-dioxolan-2-one is used as a precursor for various devices such as solar cells and semiconductors. This compound has a relatively low density of 1.06 g/mL.
