2, 4-Dimethylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium (DMS) is a strong osmotic agent that has been used in the treatment of congestive heart failure. It has an activity coefficient of 1.05, which means that it can be used to maintain the volume of a solution in equilibrium with its surroundings. This is important because many solutions are hypertonic and therefore need to be diluted with water or other diluents before they can be administered safely. DMS is also useful for maintaining osmotic pressure in cells and tissues during periods of dehydration.
