Naphazoline is a drug that is used to reduce congestion and swelling of the nose and throat. It is a sympathomimetic amine that causes vasoconstriction by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa, thereby reducing congestion. Naphazoline also has an absorption enhancer effect on hydrochloric acid, which increases its solubility in water. The food composition of naphazoline is mainly in meats, nuts, and vegetables. Naphazoline has been shown to be absorbed into human serum through the gastrointestinal tract. This drug may also cause vasoconstriction of the papillary muscle and ventricular myocardium, which may lead to cardiac arrest. Naphazoline can be antagonized with an antidote such as ethylene diamine or atropine sulfate.
