3-Methylsulfolane is a tetrahydrothiophene that is used as an organic solvent, cationic surfactant, and electrochemical additive. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor. 3-Methylsulfolane has been shown to react with hydroxide solution and aromatic hydrocarbons in alkaline media to form reaction products. It reacts with the hydroxyl group on the aromatic ring to form an ether linkage. This reaction yields solute and additives that are soluble in water. The solute consists of corrosion inhibitors, which are substances that prevent corrosion of metal surfaces by reacting with oxygen or other oxidizing agents to form inactive compounds.
