4-Ethyl-m-xylene is a byproduct of the petrochemical industry. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent odor. 4-Ethyl-m-xylene has been shown to be genotoxic and carcinogenic in laboratory animals, but not in humans. The substance has also been found to cause liver cirrhosis in rats, but this effect was not seen in mice or monkeys. 4-Ethyl-m-xylene is a member of the group of cyclic hydrocarbons that have been shown to have an increased risk for cancer. This chemical has also been reported to cause damage to the upper respiratory tract when inhaled at high levels.
