1,1-Diphenyl-ethylene oxide is a chemical compound that is used in the production of epoxides, cationic polymers, and ferrocene. 1,1-Diphenyl-ethylene oxide can be synthesized by the reaction of sodium carbonate and an epoxide. This reaction produces a mixture of products that are separated by fractional distillation. The product consists primarily of 1,1-diphenylethylene oxide. The conversion of 1,1-diphenylethylene oxide to epoxides is accomplished by ring opening with acid or base catalysts. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study the heterocycles formed from the reaction between piperazine and 1,1-diphenylethane oxide. Trifluoroacetic acid is also often added to react with 1,1-diphenylethane oxide in order to produce trifluoropropanol
