It is used in the production of chiral drugs and as an intermediate for other organic compounds. 4-Oxoheptanoic acid has been shown to be a useful oxidizing agent for the oxidation of alcohols and amines and has been used to oxidize tobacco. This compound also exhibits properties of an acidic reagent with a pKa of 11.8.
