3-Hydroxypicolinamide is a redox-active molecule that binds to the high-affinity amide site of the proton pump, thereby preventing acid secretion from the parietal cells. This drug has been shown to have antihypertensive activity in laboratory rats by reducing blood pressure and heart rate. 3-Hydroxypicolinamide also inhibits tumor growth in mice by suppressing cancer suppressor genes such as collagenase and matrix metalloproteinases. The molecule has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of HIV infection in vitro, which may be due to its ability to bind with zinc ions and inhibit HIV protein synthesis.
