ω-Octalactam is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits the formation of bacterial cell walls. ω-Octalactam binds to the enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase, which is involved in fatty acid synthesis, and prevents the reduction of 2,4-dienoyl CoA to acetic acid. The binding of ω-octalactam to this enzyme causes inhibition of bacterial growth. This antibiotic is effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. ω-Octalactam also has anti-inflammatory properties through its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity.
