Cyclohexanone phenylhydrazone (CHP) is a synthetic chemical that has antibacterial activity. It is used to treat bacterial infections, such as those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Proteus mirabilis. CHP is activated by acid catalysts and forms reactive nitrogen species. This chemical binds to the heme group of cytochrome P-450 in the bacterial cell wall and causes an increase in the ionisation mass of this enzyme. This results in a transfer mechanism that leads to the formation of reaction products and ultimately cell death.
