2-Dimethylaminoethyl benzilate (2DMB) is an estrogen that has been used as a solvent and an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. 2DMB is found to be active at low doses. It has been shown to decrease acetylcholine release, increase spontaneous activity, and induce synaptic transmission. High doses cause depression, cardiac arrest, and death. 2DMB also inhibits polymerase activity and DNA synthesis. The stereoisomers of this drug have different effects on the central nervous system: one form increases cerebral cortical activity while the other form decreases it. Both forms are anticholinergic agents, meaning they block the action of acetylcholine at synapses with cholinergic cells in the brain.
