Chloramphenicol sodium succinate is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the production of energy. It blocks the conversion of glucose to pyruvate, as well as the conversion of acetyl-CoA to citrate. Chloramphenicol sodium succinate also binds to DNA and RNA, which prevents protein synthesis and cell division. The drug has been shown to be effective against a number of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, chlamydia, and Salmonella typhi. Chloramphenicol sodium succinate is used in wastewater treatment systems and is not absorbed by skin or gastrointestinal tract. This drug is sold under various trade names, including Chloromycetin (US), Chlorochin (Canada) and Chlorotabs (UK).
