Diallyl Maleate is a film-forming polymer that is stable in water and has the ability to form a protective coating on surfaces. It has been used as a synthetic substrate for boron nitride, polyvinyl and radiation. Diallyl Maleate can be synthesized by cationic polymerization of allyl carbonate using zirconium oxide or titanium dioxide as catalysts. The reactive functional group in diallyl maleate is an alkanoic acid, which allows it to react with other compounds. The particles of this compound are small enough to be carried by water vapor and are able to form stable films on surfaces such as metals and plastics.
