Biotinamidocaproate tobramycin amide (BAT) is a small-molecule that binds to the ribosome and inhibits translation. BAT has been shown to inhibit the expression of genes by preventing mRNA from being translated into protein. The addition of BAT to cells induces an increase in RNA polymerase II activity, leading to increased transcription of mRNA. This leads to a higher rate of protein synthesis and cell division.
