Description:

Poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMEMA) is a polymer that has been used in the treatment of infectious diseases. It has an antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. PDMEMA is also effective against multidrug resistant organisms such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). PDMEMA is water soluble and can be easily removed from the body by urine or feces. This polymer can be synthesized from methacrylate monomers, which are readily available commercially. The PDMEMA polymer has shown to have high antibacterial efficacy for human serum and cell nuclei when tested with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
