(RS)-Carbocisteine is a drug that is used to treat chronic cough. It inhibits the release of HCl in the stomach, which may relieve symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. Carbocisteine is not absorbed into the bloodstream and does not affect blood pH. It has been shown to be effective in treating chronic cough, but it also has side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. These side effects are rare when carbocisteine is taken with sodium carbonate or sodium citrate. The use of carbocisteine should be avoided in patients with mitochondrial dysfunction or who have a history of asthma or other respiratory disorders.
