Potassium hexachlororuthenate is an industrial chemical that can be used as a catalyst in the production of organic solvents. It is also a bimetallic catalyst with high yield and can be used to produce rhodium chloride. This chemical has been shown to react with ethanol in the presence of an organic solvent to produce chloroethylene and hydrogen gas, which are then reacted with hydrochloric acid to form ethylene dichloride. Potassium hexachlororuthenate is also an element that has been found in nature. It has been found in its trichloride form and can be isolated from the mineral pyrolusite, which is a mineral ore of ruthenium.
