Brucein B is a quassinoid that has potent antitumor activity. Brucein B inhibits protein synthesis in tumor cells by binding to the ribosomes and blocking the formation of peptide bonds. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Brucein B has been shown to have an effect on cancer cells in vivo and in vitro, but not on non-cancerous cells. This indicates that Brucein B may be selectively cytotoxic against cancer cells. The mechanism of action is not yet fully elucidated, but it may involve hydrogen bonding with tumor cell membranes or inhibition of DNA synthesis through interference with DNA gyrase or topoisomerase II.
