Benzyl Butyl Ketone is a solvent that can be used as a hydration agent in organic reactions. It is also used in the rate enhancement of organic reactions, where it reversibly binds to an active site on the reactant molecule and then dissociates when a product molecule is formed. Benzyl Butyl Ketone has functional groups that are acidic and bidentate ligands, which interact with solutes by bond cleavage or specific interactions. The reaction rate of solutes is increased when they are dissolved in this solvent, due to its high dielectric constant. The reaction solution obtained from using this solvent will emit light upon irradiation with ultraviolet light. Benzyl Butyl Ketone has two stereoisomers, one of which is more stable than the other.
