Description

Cephalosporin C zinc (ZnC) is a chlorhexidine-containing cephalosporin antibiotic. It has been shown to have an uptake of 3.5 times more than the parent compound, cephalosporin C. ZnC inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their cell wall and blocking its biosynthesis. The drug also prevents bacterial resistance by inhibiting multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) in the cell membrane, which mediates efflux of toxic substances from inside the cell to outside. ZnC has been shown to be effective against multidrug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. ZnC is also used in cancer therapy because it can inhibit tumor cells from dividing and growing.
