N-Methylflindersine is a β-unsaturated aldehyde that is used as an intermediate in the preparation of zanthosimuline, a quinone methide. It is produced by the dimerization of two acetylacetones. The chemical name for N-Methylflindersine is 2-(2-methyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)butanal and it has a molecular weight of 142.14 g/mol. N-Methylflindersine can be found in nature as well as being synthesized artificially. This chemical was first isolated from Australian rock samples and is not very stable at room temperature, decomposing to form acetic acid and methanol.
