Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer. It is a member of the class of drugs called analgesics, which work by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Acetaminophen blocks the production of prostaglandins, hormones that cause inflammation, fever, and pain in response to injury or disease. Acetaminophen is effective against mild pain and reduces fever by acting on a part of the brain that moderates body temperature. Acetaminophen has been used for more than 100 years to relieve pain and reduce fever. The drug can be taken orally, intravenously (IV), or rectally as a suppository. When taken orally, acetaminophen is metabolized in the liver by first-pass metabolism into its biologically inactive form, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which can be detoxified by conjugation with glutathione before being eliminated from the body.
