Methyl p-toluenesulfonylacetate is an aryl sulfonyl chloride that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is also used to prepare aziridines, chlorides, and sulfones. Methyl p-toluenesulfonylacetate has been shown to be useful for the labeling of biomolecules such as proteins and nucleotides. This compound can be prepared by reacting diazoesters with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in alcohols or ethers. Methyl p-toluenesulfonylacetate can also be synthesized through ring opening of diazoesters with strong acids. This process is stereospecific and yields only one product, which can be purified via vacuum distillation. The wavelength of radiation required for this reaction to occur ranges from 190 nm to 230 nm and the reaction temperature should be in the range of 50°C to 70°C.
