- Methyl o-ethylbenzoate
Methyl 2-ethylbenzoate is a chemical compound that is used as a fragrance. It is an ester of 2-ethylbenzoic acid and methanol. Methyl 2-ethylbenzoate can be synthesized by the alkaline hydrolysis of o-toluic acid using methyl alcohol. This reaction requires heat and a catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The optical rotation of the product depends on the substituent effects, which in this case are due to electron withdrawing groups such as chlorine or nitro groups. Geotrichum candidum, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger are examples of fungi that can produce methyl 2-ethylbenzoate from glucose in the presence of oxygen.
