2-Methoxy-2,4-diphenyl-3(2H)-furanone is a fluorescent derivative of 2,4-diphenyl-3(2H)-furanone. It is an amine that reacts with fatty acids to form a molecule that fluoresces when exposed to light. This product is used in the serological detection of collagen and subunits in tissue culture and as a substrate for the polymerase chain reaction. The agarose gel electrophoresis and chemiluminescent reactions are also routinely used to determine the concentration of this product. 2-Methoxy-2,4-diphenyl-3(2H)-furanone has been shown to react with metal chelates such as lanthanide chelates and diamagnetic metal chelates for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
