Ethyl 4'-hydroxy[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylate is an acid ethyl ester that belongs to the group of halogenated compounds. It is a liquid crystal compound that has an optically active form. The optical rotation of this liquid crystal compound is +34° (c=0.5 in ethanol). This compound can be prepared by reacting p-toluenesulfonic acid with ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and chloroacetaldehyde in the presence of a base such as triethylamine. The spontaneous formation of crystals from this compound has been reported.br>br>This chemical is mainly used for the preparation of other organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.
