5-Chloro-3-ethylbenzo[c]isoxazole is a halogenated organic compound that is synthesized by intramolecular cyclization. It is the first member of a new class of compounds that have been shown to inhibit the enzyme hydrogen chloride, which is responsible for the conversion of bile acids to cholesterol. This process is important in the development of atherosclerosis and heart disease. 5-Chloro-3-ethylbenzo[c]isoxazole also has antibacterial activity against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae.
