3'-N,N-Di(desmethyl)-3'-N-formyl azithromycin is a form of the antibiotic azithromycin. It has been shown to be effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, but is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as mycobacteria or mycobacterium avium complex. 3'-N,N-Di(desmethyl)-3'-N-formyl azithromycin has also been shown to be active against viruses and fungal infections. This drug binds to bacterial ribosomes and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
