Methyl 5-chloro-2-ethoxybenzoate is an antiviral drug that inhibits the growth of herpes and other viruses. It has a toxic effect on cells and is used in vivo to test for the presence of herpes. Methyl 5-chloro-2-ethoxybenzoate is also used as a topical treatment for herpes, with effectiveness against simplex virus, vaccinia, and influenza. This drug has been shown to inhibit viral replication by inhibiting viral protein synthesis. In vitro studies have shown that methyl 5-chloro-2-ethoxybenzoate prevents the influenza virus from binding to host cells.
