1,3-Dinitropyrene is a genotoxic compound that belongs to the class of nitro compounds. It has been shown to have genotoxic effects on hamster V79 cells and potassium dichromate-activated rat liver microsomes. 1,3-Dinitropyrene can induce necrotic cell death in vitro and in vivo. This compound has a carcinogenic potential and is capable of inducing redox imbalance in the cell. The analytical methods for the measurement of 1,3-dinitropyrene are based on its redox potential, which can be determined by measuring the reduction or oxidation of dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) at various concentrations of 1,3-dinitropyrene. The biochemical properties of this compound are similar to those observed with other nitro compounds such as nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide.
