Barbigerone is a carotenoid that has anti-angiogenic effects. It inhibits the growth of blood vessels by preventing the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. Barbigerone does this by binding to specific proteins in endothelial cells, which are cells in the lining of blood vessels. This binding prevents the formation of new blood vessels by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling. The mechanism of action for barbigerone is similar to that of other anti-angiogenic agents such as bevacizumab and sunitinib, which have been shown to have cancer therapeutic effects. Barbigerone has also been shown to inhibit tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) activity, a key inflammatory cytokine involved in cancer development.
